ARITHMETIC

Number of dice:                     Five

Ante:                                       1 Unit

Object of game:                    To get the highest score by arithmetical manipulation

METHOD OF PLAY

Players roll in turn as follows:

The dice are rolled one at a time The player can add, subtract, multiply by and divide by the numbers which follow the first one, using these processes in any sequence he chooses but only once each, aiming at getting as high a total as possible.

The general rule is to add and multiply by the higher numbers, subtract and divide by the lower ones, but this game can become quite subtle. For example, suppose the dice happen to appear in the order 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 quite different totals can result from the player’s decision on the arithmetic.

1 - 2 ÷ 3 + 4 x 5 =              18 1/3

1 ÷ 2 + 3 x 4 - 5 =                9

1 + 2 x 3 - 4 ÷ 5 =                1

1 + 2 ÷ 3 x 4 - 5 =               - 1
